Delicious & Gluten Free in Croatia

The holiday of caprese salads...

Croatia was an amazing trip. The country is beautiful and the food amazing. We stayed in Dubrovnik and I had no problem eating out gluten free... the only thing is, in most of the restaurants we tried, the gluten free option was a caprese salad - good job I love it!

The food was all fresh and delicious. There was lots of tapas style food, salad and fish that was naturally gluten free and quite a few of the waiters I met knew about eating gluten free.

My favourite restaurant we went to was Restaurant Horizont (below) which is located on the steps, overlooking the harbour. And you, guessed it, I had a caprese salad. The waiter was really friendly and knowledgeable about gluten free eating which was reassuring. The ambiance and night time views were magical - I couldn't quite capture it in a photo.

On the last night we had a lovely meal in a stunning restaurant called Gradska Kavana Arsenal next to the harbour.

While the food was delicious, I had the fish carpaccio below, the staff were quite rude and not willing to help me with the gluten free issue which was a shame because it meant I wasn't very comfortable eating there.

My friend found us a lovely Airbnb with a beautiful balcony. It was perfect as I could bring some of my own food too. I even found some gluten free beer in supermarket.

I went to Croatia with my best friends from school, but not everyone in the group could come on the trip. I am incredibly lucky to have a group of friends like them. We have stayed friends for 23 years and I love them so much. No matter how much time we spend apart, when we are back together its like no time has passed and nothing has changed. They put me back together when my life fell apart and I am eternally grateful for that.

We saw some amazing places when we were there, my favourites were:
  • Cable car in Dubrovink at sunset - incredible views over the city
  • Walls of Ston
  • Lokrum Island
  • Sailing into 'King's Landing' (if you saw my post on Iceland, I love to visit places where Game of Thrones is filmed!)
